Owner's Description
United States Coinage Gold dollar Type 3 Large Indian Head Design 1874 MS-62 Obv. “Indian Head Princess” facing left with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around edge Rev. Denomination at center with date below all within a wreath (any mint mart would be centered below wreath. Due to a design problem resulting in weak strikes of the type 2 gold dollar which was introduced into circulation in 1854 by 1855 it was realized that changes to the type 2 design were needed. Designer/engraver James Longacre quickly changed the design elements on the type 2 gold dollar based on the design of the gold $3 coin. These design changes evidently proved to be satisfactory in solving the of weal strikes. My cost for this coin was $225
