Owner's Description
Colonial Coinage New Jersey Copper 1786 Straight Beam – Narrow Shield This is a Marris 14-J which is a common variety VF-30 Brown Census - 46 NGC graded coins - 13 VF's / VF-30 ? - 22 graded higher Three individuals from England with a lot of support from Revolutionary War hero Gen. Matthias Ogden approached the New Jersey State Assembly requesting permission to strike 3 million coppers to pass at 15 to a New Jersey shilling. The coins were to weigh 150 grs. (this being the state assembly’s idea of the proper weight of a Tower mint halfpence). The proposal was accepted and conditions set. The State Supreme Court selected from sample impressions presented the design for the New Jersey coppers. The obverse selected was the “nag’s head sinister on torse, plough below, with the legend NOVA CAESAREA, date in exergue.” The reverse showed arms, argent, six pales gules, a chief azure, motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A quarreled divided the team before the effort even started and two separate mints were established with 1,000,000 coppers to be produce at one mint (one of the original three members) and 2,000,000 coppers to be produced at the other. Hard times fell upon both efforts and no one ever attained the wealth they had hoped for. This coin cost me $415
