Owner's Description
Venezuela 20 Bolivares - 1904 MS-64 Y #32 Census - 39 graded by NGC - 4 with this grade - two higher Obv. – Head of Bolivar right – Legend: BOLIVAR LIBERTADOR Rev. – Cornucopias above arms within sprigs all above banner – Legend: ESTRADOS UNIDOS DE VENEZUELA Columbus discovered Venezuela during his third voyage in 1498. No significant mainland settlements were made before 1567 when Caracas was founded. In 1810 Venezuela (the home of Bolivar) was among the first South American colonies to rebel against Spain. Independence was attained in 1821 but not recognized by Spain until 1845. Together with Ecuador, Panama, and Columbia, Venezuela was part of “Grand Colombia” until 1830, when it became sovereign and independent state. This coin has got to be one of my holdings. Not because it is rare or its grade (which really is nothing to write home about) but because it was won in a result of a bet with the President of Venezuela. How many pieces can be traced back to such an event???? I purchased this coin from one of the many Garrett Auctions, I was totally attracted to this coin because of how it came into the Garrett Collection. It was one of twenty such coins won by Mrs. Garrett from the president of Venezuela as the result of a bet at a race track. The Venezuelan Secretary of the Treasury was with the President and personally paid Mrs. Garrett from his own pocket. What other hobby gives you such history? I purchased this coin for $150.
