Owner's Description
1904 is the first year for the newly engraved Dinero hubs used through 1916, and subtle changes may be seen compared to the 1893-1903 type. The lettering and numerals are now thinner, the design elements of the reverse shield show slight differences, the wreath above the shield has a different texture, all elements are crisper, and berries are now 3-2-3. The catalog does not recognize 1904-1916 as a separate type. And although the reworking of the design was minor, it does have a fairly obvious, more "crisp" look about it. Prooflike reverses with heavy die lines for this date and following are common. The changes in the 1/5 Sol three years earlier in 1901 were a bit more pronounced; the newer 1/5 Sols having a "looser" font for LIBERTAD. The LIBERTAD on the Dineros was mostly unchanged in 1904. The 1904 is a sleeper in the later date Dinero series. Finding an example in any better grade can present a challenge, despite being priced at "common" levels in the catalog. It may be just as scarce as the 1902 in mint state. Gems are rare. No varieties are given by Flatt or Krause. Berries are now 3-2-3. One in AU 55 at NGC, one in MS 62 at NGC, two in MS 63 at PCGS, two in MS 64 at NGC, and one in MS 65 at NGC. One six coins in mint state at both major services for this supposedly "common date". The set specimen is tied for second place with one other coin; one better in 65. A bright white coin, the reverse features a bit of reflectivity along with die lines so often seen on the later dates.
