Smokey, Roger, and Jerry, Uncle Sams nephews, are the stars in this first issue of Headline Comics. Known as the Jr. Rangers, they, along with Atomic Man, are the main characters in the first 22 issues. With the war over the comic became a crime comic.

HEADLINE COMICS #1
Condition: CGC 7.5 VF-
Census Rank: 3rd Highest Graded
Page Quality: Off-White to White Pages
Type of Holder: Universal
Degree Of Restoration: Unrestored
Item description: 1943
ComicLink Comments:
This is the only CGC 7.5 of this 1943 premiere issue and only two have ever been graded higher. Additionally, CGC has assigned their near perfect page quality designation: Off-White to White Pages. The Overstreet Price Guide lists this item in the condition offered for $310.
There are now 4 graded higher.
Okay, do these three really look like their from the same family. Smokey looks like he’s a hood from a big city. Roger looks a farmer from Iowa. Jerry looks like some nerd (intellect) from Europe. Oh right, nephews of Uncle Sam, guess they could be from any place in the USA. Jerry must be from some Ivy League school.

Another great WWII cover with the Jr. Rangers attacking a Nippon battleship. Those three kids could do anything.
Purchased off from eBay in 2008 for just over a $100. With only 4 graded copies out there doesn’t seem like a bad price.
I like how the gunner (Smokey) of the PT boat has some protection and the drivers (Roger & Jerry) are just out in the open. Did PT Boats really pirate steering wheels. Really nice looking issue but for a line of something down the left side. It almost looks like something from the printers or maybe where another comic layed on top of this one and left a little transfer line.

Nice war cover by H. Kiefer. Pretty decent book from the front. The back cover is kind of beat and therefore the 5.0 grade. Only 4 graded copies of this issue.
I’m always surprised when a book with only 4 graded copies sells on eBay for 50 bucks, well $52 in this case.
If you were trying to hide this building would you camouflage it with those colors and then stick a huge Nazi logo on it. Tons of Hitler appearances in this series with a great opening splash in this issue.

About the Mark Austin Collection:
This item comes from the collection of Mark Austin, a longtime collector and founder of Acme Comics (Greensboro, NC). Assembled over a period of nearly 50 years, Mr. Austin's collection includes examples from many of the most significant and desirable runs of the Golden Age. A true lover of comic books, Mr. Austin acquired examples not just for their individual quality, but also as a completist, building impressive runs of major superhero titles like Action Comics, Batman, and Marvel Mystery Comics, as well as many genre titles such as Jumbo Comics and Planet Comics. ComicLink is thrilled to be offering Mr. Austin's collection in this and other upcoming auctions as one of the most extensive Golden Age groupings we have ever brought to our bidders.
More Hitler sightings in this issue, in fact, according to this issue Hitler is living under a National Park, in a forgotten city, while all his doubles are the ones being seen in Germany. Wild stuff.

Okay, lets be clear, that is not a picture of me. Some guy named Charles Atlas.
The front cover gives ua a good look at the main heros. I guess this could have been given the "Bondage" note by CGC as the boys are tied-up. Great centering as well as a looking spine.
There only 5 copies of this issue graded. This copy is tied with another 7.5 for second highest graded.

I love this cover. Great Holmes outfit, hat and all. The ghost is a bit spooky to. Only 7 graded copies of this issue. The boys are looking pretty snazzy here in the opening splash.

I love this war cover. How do the Jr. Rangers think they are going to get away with those critters pulling them? Hey, is that Santa’s sleigh? This is one sweet comic.
It has a date stamp and there is a word on the bottom edge that is part way cut off and it still gets a 8.5.
If not for those two things it could have been a 9.2 or so. With only 7 graded copies this is tied for highest graded with one other. I won this copy at a auction by B. Hughes where it was listed as a 9.4. I could tell from the pictures it would most likely not get that grade. I won it and sent it to CGC. There’s a small chip on one back corner that brought it down to the 8.5.

Took this one away from Metropolis Collectibles for a nice price of $138. I seem to remember offering $135 and they came back with $138, Just seemed a bit odd coming back with 3 bucks higher. Just a so-so cover but the back is kind of cool. There are only 5 copies of this issue graded with this one being the second highest graded.

I'm going to have to find a reading copy of this issue as it's one of those covers that make you want to know what's going on inside the book. I just can’t believe the low number of graded books for this series. This issue only has 4 copies graded. I would think there can’t be many more worth grading out there.

Picked this one up from eBay. The seller never mentioned and the picture was so bad that I didn't know it was a Ohio pedegree till I opened the box.
Nice classic Charles Atlas back cover. This is as far as I'll collect this series as after this it goes to all crime stories.
12/04/09- I'm now going for the entire set. I don't see this series come up much so it could take a life time.
Only 3 grade copies of which this is the second highest graded.
