Set Description:

Synopsis: This is a set of 155 Detective Comics from the late Golden Age and Silver Age with a minimum grade of 8.0. All of the books fall between Issues #201 and #400 with 43 of the books in the set being single highest graded examples.

Background: Detective Comics is an anthology comic featuring detective characters, both superhero and civilian. The longest-lasting character in Detective Comics was Batman, as from the time of his debut (#27, May 1939), the Caped Crusader was almost always the star of the cover and lead story.

Detective Comics has remained in publication longer than any other DC Comics title, and indeed, the very name DC was taken from its initials. In March 2019, Detective became only the third American comic book in history-after Action and the Four Color series of the 1930s-60s by Dell Comics-to publish a 1,000th issue.

Our Collection: Our focus in collecting Detectives is really the Silver Age books, which unfortunately straddle two other sets #201-300 and #301-400. We just registered the books here to have one place where we can quickly reference all our Detectives, we have zero intent-or money LOL- to ever finish this set.

Currently, we have 154 books in this set with a goal of collecting 200, although it’s not a goal we will probably ever achieve. We may eventually shorten our target to Issues #240-400, which is really where our interest lies, and sell our earlier books. But for now, the search goes on.

Issue #201 represents not just the start of this set, but the start of our Detectives collection, as we have now sold all earlier issues we once owned. It features a Human Target appearance and rather a cool cover with a would-be assassin stepping out of an antique grandfather clock. Our 9.6 is currently the single highest graded copy in the census. We acquired the book in the 3/20/2023 Heritage Auction.*

Issue #210 features a story “The Brain that Ruled Gotham City”. We were actually debating selling all our Detectives earlier than Issue #240, but then four books between #201 and #219, all highest graded examples, sold for basically half what they had made in 2021-2022. We were the buyer and those bargains convinced us to keep our books between #201 and #240. This was one of those four books, which we acquired in the March 30, 2023 Heritage Auction. It is currently the single highest graded example in the census.*

issue #212 features an appearance by the Puppet Master. Speaking of which, how many Puppet Masters have there been in comics? The FF’s foe in Issue #8 immediately comes to mind, but that was years after this book. While just an 8.5, this book is tied with one other copy for highest graded: and it was a relative bargain. We acquired the book from the 3/31/2023 Heritage Auction.

Not sure what it was with DC and Robin Hood, but he seems to make appearances on quite a few 1950s DC covers, such as here and Wonder Woman. There are just 26 copies of this issue ever certified by CGC. Our 9.0 is the single highest graded copy ever certified by CGC. We acquired the book from the 6/26/2024 ComicConnect Auction.

I am an antique car enthusiast and actually have owned both a 55 Thunderbird and a 1929 Model A Cabriolet, which I still have although rarely drive. So when this book reappeared on the market and was obtainable at auction at a substantial discount from its last sale, we jumped at the opportunity, as this 9.0 is the single higher graded example of this Golden Age issue from the Alfred Pennyworth Collection. We acquired the book from the 3/30/2023 Heritage Auction.

A second Batman team using crossbows-said in the voice of the guy from the Curse of Oak Island or Ancient Aliens. That’s what is featured on the cover of Issue #220. While we normally don’t buy 8.0s, in this case, it’s the single highest graded example in the census-at least for now, so we took the plunge. We acquired the book off an e-bay listing in February 2024.
