In 1931 the reverse design was changed only in so far as the inscription on the reverse design was concerned. The obverse design shows the crowned & coronation enrobed bust of King George V with inscription GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR. The reverse design shows an inverted triangle the sides of which are formed by three bundles (representing the denomination) of 4 kindling sticks (representing the provinces & indicating the unity of the provinces by being tied) tied at the ends and a floret at each angle and a PROTEA CYNAROIDES bloom with 2 leaves on the stem placed in the centre of the design, with inscription * SOUTH - AFRICA * DATE * SUID - AFRIKA * 3D. The reverse design was used in years 1931 up to & including 1936.
