Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The obverse design shows the crowned & coronation enrobed bust of King George V with inscription GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR. The reverse design for the Quarter Penny shows 2 sparrows perched on a sprig of mimosa within a circle. Changes to the inscription were made in the following subsequent years: 1926 & 1931. The reverse design inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * DATE * ZUID - AFRIKA * 1/4 PENNY 1/4. No farthings were struck in 1925 & the reverse design changed in 1926.

Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Half Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1923 Half Penny reverse remained the same for 1924, 1925 & 1926 with no coins struck for 1927. The denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1/2 PENNY 1/2". Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).

Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1923 Penny reverse remained the same for 1924. The denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1 PENNY 1". Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).

The reverse design shows a wreath of mimosa encircling the figure 3 with inscription * SOUTH - AFRICA * ZUID - AFRIKA * DATE. The reverse design was only utilised for 1923, 1924 & part of 1925. In 1925 the design changed sometime during the year.

The reverse design shows a wreath of mimosa, the stems of which are tied with a ribbon, encircling the figure 6 with inscription * SOUTH - AFRICA * ZUID - AFRIKA * DATE. The reverse design was only utilised for 1923, 1924.

The obverse design shows the crowned & coronation enrobed bust of King George V with inscription GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR. The reverse design shows within a beaded circle, the standing draped female figure of HOPE, which is representative of the Cape Province. She is facing right gazing over a calm sea with her right arm leaning on an anchor. There is also a sixpointed star to the right of her left shoulder. The inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * DATE * ZUID - AFRIKA * 1 SHILLING 1. This design was only utilised in 1923 & 1924.

The reverse design shows a garnished uncrowned shield quartered with the symbols for the four provinces of the union namely the figure of HOPE for the CAPE, 2 running wildebeeste facing left for NATAL, an orange tree for the ORANGE FREE STATE & an ox wagon for the TRANSVAAL - THE ARMS OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA. The date is split on either side of the shield. The inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * ZUID - AFRIKA * FLORIN. This reverse design was used for all years up to and including 1930.

The date is split on either side of the shield. The inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * ZUID - AFRIKA * 2 1/2 SHILLINGS 2 1/2. The reverse design was used for 1923, 1924 & 1925.

The Gold Sovereign King George V series from 1923 to 1928 displays a side view bust of King George V with a slightly larger head than the later years dated 1929 to 1932 The obverse from 1923 1928 also displays avery minor change to the later years dated 1929 to 1932. Obverse designer Bertram Mackennal , Reverse designer Benedetto Pistrucci. Gold content 7.3224 grams

The reverse design changed to an open PROTEA CYNAROIDES bloom with 2 leaves on the stem, enclosed by a hexagon formed by 6 bundles of kindling sticks ( representing the denomination) of 4 sticks per bundle (representing the 4 provinces) tied in the middle with inscription * SOUTH - AFRICA * DATE * ZUID - AFRIKA * 6 PENCE. The reverse design was used from 1925 to 1930.

Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1926 Penny reverse remained the same for 1927, 1928, 1929 & 1930. The change on the reverse applied to the inscription where the denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "PENNY". Furthermore the rope rigging changed with subtle differences noticeable between the top two sails & by the centre mast bottom sail. Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).

The obverse design shows the crowned & coronation enrobed bust of King George V with inscription GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR. The reverse design shows a garnished CROWNED (unlike the florin which is uncrowned) shield quartered with the symbols for the four provinces of the union namely the figure of HOPE for the CAPE, 2 running wildebeeste facing left for NATAL, an orange tree for the ORANGE FREE STATE & an ox wagon for the TRANSVAAL - THE ARMS OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA. The date is split on either side of the shield. The inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * ZUID - AFRIKA * 2 1/2 SHILLINGS. The reverse design remained unchanged until 1931.

The inscription found on the 1928 Half Penny reverse remained the same for 1929, 1930 & for 1931 business strikes. The 1931 Half Penny Proof had changes made to its reverse design. The denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1/2 PENNY". Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).
