Set Description
New Guinea is the world's second largest island. It is located in the SouthWest Pacific just north of Australia. Until 1962 the administration of the island was divided between the Netherlands which administered Western New Guinea and Australia which administered Eastern New Guinea.

The SouthEast portion of the island (Papua New Guinea) was a British Territory administered by Australia from 1910 - 1952. The Northeast portion of the island (German New Guinea) was a German colony from 1884 - 1918. During the first World War German New Guinea was occupied by Australian forces. It was mandated to Australia by the League of Nations in 1920, known as the Territory of New Guinea.

In 1942 Japan invaded and occupied the Territory of New Guinea and was threatening Papua New Guinea and Australia. The jungles of New Guinea saw some of the fiercest battles of the second world war. The coins in this set were struck for the Australian Territory of New Guinea.

The coins in this set have a special connection to my family heritage as my father served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the campaign to retake New Guinea.
