An incredible copper from this time period and location. The smoothest milk chocolate surfaces that I have seen on one of these types in any grade. Graded NGC AU58 with only one higher at MS62, but I could not find any photos of it to compare surface quality. Given this coin's grade and surfaces, I consider this a grand rarity. Exceptional with no corrosion or piercing. The vast majority of survivors are environmentally challenged in my opinion.

Santo Domingo mint, assayer “F” (Francisco Rodríguez)

Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the Caribbean's oldest cities.

Santo Domingo Mint coins of Charles and Joanna are much rarer than those struck at the Mexico City Mint, although they are often more crude in their construction, according to Cori Sedwick Downing, who cataloged the Santo Domingo coins. She also authored an essay about the coins of Santo Domingo and compiled a census of auction appearances, both of which are included in the auction catalog.

The Santo Domingo Mint began operating about six years after the Mexico City Mint and produced silver coins from 1542 to 1552. The paucity of coins (compared to the thousands known from the Mexico City Mint over the same time period) may be due to lack of native silver and demand, according to Downing.

KM-C-2 (undertype); CAL-Type 26#68 (undertype). Stohr- R. I. 23. Issued by decree of 4 June 1823, repealed by decree of 14 March 1826. Nonsensical raised "Chinese" inscription within rectangle shaped border applied to the obverse of an 1817 Caracas Royalist 1/4 Real. The countermark is boldly applied with good definition of the fine details to a nicely preserved and attractive host. The surfaces are smooth displaying rich chocolate brown patina with areas of richer coloration. This wholly original looking survivor is very attractive for the issue and far nicer than normally encountered.

The port city of Puerto Cabello was the last remaining Spanish royalist stronghold during the Venezuelan war for independence. This city was important to the Spanish crown and was used as a hub by the Spanish navy in carrying troops, arms, stores and other needed supplies from Spain to her colonies. After several decisive battles the city was captured by Jose Antonio Paez Herrera on 8 November 1823.

This beautiful cob displays a full 4-digit date, which is quite scarce on 1/2 real cobs, given their small size. KM-386.1. Tied with two other examples for finest certified. A coin struck at the very beginning of Maximilian's great Mexican adventure, or great Mexican mis-adventure as it eventually became. In late April of 1864, Maximillian stepped down from his position as the Chief of The Naval Section in Austria, and headed for Mexico with the implicit backing of Napoleon III of France. Arriving in Veracruz in late May that same year, there never was a "Camelot" or honeymoon period, with staunch resistance from liberal forces led by President Benito Juarez encountered from the very start of his rule. It stands to reason given his date of arrival in mid-year, the coin offered here was struck at some point in the second half of 1864. Clearly a coin that was set aside almost the instant it was made, well struck and highly lustrous, and with clear evidence of die clashing adding yet another level of interest to be explored up close. A coin that rightfully belongs with the 5 Centavos in this collection. See it above this coin.

NGC #2789284-016. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman Numismatic Cabinet.

Royal coinage was struck on specially prepared round planchets using well-centered dies in excellent condition to prove the quality of the minting to the Viceroy or even to the King.

The Isaac Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins was one of the finest groupings of colonial Mexican coins ever assembled.
"Isaac is one of the greatest collectors of Latino/Caribbean coins, artifacts, documents, currency and fine art to ever live," said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. "His eye for quality and beauty is absolutely second to none.

The Mexico City mint represents the most historically important minting facility of the Americas, having existed for nearly five centuries since operations commenced in 1536. Under Spanish dominance, it was always the pioneering entity among its peers, as was fitting to the mint of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

A very rare coin. Mexico 1842/32 DO RM 2 Reales. A desirable Durango Mint coin; NGC has only graded two, this piece and one in VF35. PCGS has not graded any. A late die state. As shown on slab, ex. Eric P. Newman Collection.

Shown is an 1842DoRM two reales, one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1826, 1832-35 and 1841-61. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) is recorded for the years 1830-48. The Durango two reales is considerably scarcer than the catalog indicates but makes up for it with a fascinating local design, the large eagle is distinctive to this mint. This specimen is the 1842/32 overdate; no regular date is reported.

Many consider the Durango mintmark to be common on pre-decimal issues but that is only true of the eight reales and half escudos. The half, one and two reales are scarce to rare and no four reales are known to exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Quitupan, founded in 1511, is a town and municipality located in the southeastern region of the Mexican state of Jalisco. The name Quitupan comes from the word "Quitoa" or "Quitla", which means "place where declarations or treaties come from" or "place that is located above".

History
The formal indigenous foundation of the town precisely coincides with the establishment of a peace treaty between tarascos (Spanish soldiers) and natives, which occurred ten years before the arrival of the conqueror Hernán Cortés. A census taken in 1580 noted 30 integrated families.

The town was conquered by Alonso de Avalos, who nevertheless recognized the chieftainship of the original inhabitants. In 1522, Cortés dispatched one of his generals, Cristóbal de Olid to conquer Quitupan and surrounding areas. In 1530, Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán arrived to conduct a census of the native inhabitants and to impose a new order. The Evangelization of Quitupan was led by the Franciscans – in 1530, Friar Martin de Jesus began to preach, joined in 1532 by Friars Juan de Padilla and Miguel de Bologna. Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza then visited the area, under his appointment by King Charles I of Spain to pacify the various indigenous people of New Spain and to unify the territory, which was partially divided among competing conquistadors.

During the second half of the century, the region was beset by various armed confrontations between conservatives and liberals. Other historical landmarks include the Franciscan Intervention, the revolution of 1920 and the Guerra Cristera. On October 28, 1870 Quitupan was official recognized as a municipality of the state of Jalisco. Its first president was Francisco Lorenzo Gonzalez.

Quite rare as an overdate. According to Brad Yonaka's book "A Variety Guide To The Fractional Pillar Coinage of Mexico City 1732-1771" eight examples known. So this would be an additional example.
This coin sat in my collection for at least a decade or more before I took it out to look at it and noticed the overdate.
Initially I thought it might be an 1768/6 or 1768/6/7 (double overdate). According to the book, the 1768/6 is noted by Gilboy (M-05--45b). This may refer to the reverse die shown (in book), which has a distorted on left side of the 8 but no other markers suggesting a 6 in the date. As such it is not conclusive.

This appears to be the only example graded at NGC
PCGS has one graded at VF35 and the overdate is not easily recognized in their photo.
