Jaelus' Hungarian Pengo

Category:  World Coins

Set Description
The pengo monetary system was created to replace the korona following the devastating hyperinflation brought by WWI. The word pengo in Hungarian is an onomatopoeia meant to evoke the sound of a ringing bell, or in this case, ringing silver, in a bid to increase confidence in the currency. Ironically the pengo would be come the world's most hyperinflated currency of all time during WWII.

This is a complete date set of the Hungarian 1 Pengo. The set consists of coins of two types: a silver pengo struck from 1926-1939 (though only struck during 5 of those years), and an aluminum pengo struck from 1941-1944. While this is a short set of only 9 coins, finding uncirculated examples of the 1942 and 1943 pengo are extremely difficult, with 1943 being the key date in the set.

Set Goals
My goal for this collection is to acquire a gem or better example of each date. Finding examples in these grades are quite challenging, especially for the underappreciated aluminum wartime issues.

View Coin 1944 Aluminum Pengo HUNGARY 1800 TO DATE PENGO 1944BP NGC MS 66 This was the finest example from a 1944 uncirculated pengő roll. Finding a hypergem example of one of the aluminum wartime issues is a difficult task. While 1941 and 1944 are not difficult dates to find in uncirculated grades, survivors above MS63 are extremely rare.
