Set Description
This set contains all of the silver, copper, and nickel coins minted in Istanbul during the reigns of the last 6 sultans of the Ottoman Empire (Abdülmecid, Abdülaziz, Murad V, Abdulhamid II, Mehmed Resad, and Vahideddin) which is the first of the Ottoman, Egyptian and Tunisian minted coins that I have collected. It also includes coins minted in Bursa, Edirne, Kosovo, Monastir, and Thessaloniki, which are referred to as "travel coins" even though they are minted in Istanbul. In this set of 417 coins, 397 coins have been acquired. Of these, 271 coins have been certified by NGC, 37 coins have been certified by PCGS, and 89 coins have not yet been certified.

There are two main reasons why this set contains coins from the last 6 sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The first reason is that these coins are from after the Tashih-i Sikke Decree. The second reason is that in Türkiye, only coins from the last 6 sultans minted after 1839 are legal to buy and sell. Unfortunately, it is not legally possible to buy or sell coins minted before this date within the borders of the Türkiye (There are exceptions).

On silver coins minted in Istanbul, the nominal value of the coins is not struck on the coin itself. However, the only exception to this is for silver 20 para coins. In contrast, the nominal values of copper and nickel coins can be seen struck on the coins themselves. For silver coins, the nominal value of the coins can be easily determined from their diameters and weights.

The 1844 Tashih-i Sikke Decree
The Ottoman Empire entered the process of integration with the international market after signing the Balta Limani Trade Agreement with England in 1838 and other trade agreements with European states. This process affected the state's political structure as well as required the restructuring of its financial and economic structure. It was forced to comply with the pressure from Europe to provide a strong monetary system. The adjustment of the Tashih-i Sikke in 1844 was an important step for the Ottoman Empire to solve its monetary problems and prevent counterfeiting. After this date, coins were minted in a certain standard and quality.

The standard feature of coins minted after the Tashih-i Sikke is that one side bears the sultan's tughra and the other side has writing. The word "tugra" is used today as a portrait and is called "Tura". In the Ottoman Empire, sultans minted their own signatures, called tugras, instead of portraits on coins. The use of portraits was prohibited for religious reasons, and for this reason, tugras evolved over time. In this set, the coins of V. Murad and II. Abdulhamid have the same writing sections, but they can only be distinguished by the difference between the tugras and the flower on the right side of the tugra. The other side of coins minted after the Tashih-i Sikke is the written side. This side bears the minting place and the year the sultan ascended to the throne. Although the edges of copper and nickel coins minted during this period were flat, the edges of silver coins were minted with a serrated edge.

In this set of Ottoman coins minted in Istanbul, there are two separate dating systems: the year the sultan ascended to the throne and the year of minting. The year the sultan ascended to the throne is permanently minted on the written side of the coin for as long as the sultan remains on the throne. The year of minting is minted on the tugra side, indicating the year the coin was minted during the sultan's reign.

It is possible to see from the records that some coins were not minted at all in some years, while some were minted in very small quantities. Since the collection culture was not well developed in the Ottoman Empire, and calligraphic prints of them were beautiful, the fact that they were widely used as jewelry by being pierced and by attaching a handle makes it difficult to find UNC condition of many coins. Despite this, many of the coins seen in this set are among the highest condition coins seen today, and more than 60% of these coins have been obtained from outside Türkiye. Currently, this collection is being developed and its condition is being improved.I tried to upload as high resolution photos as possible.
Enjoyable collections.

1844 Tashih-i Sikke Karari

Keyifli koleksiyonlar...
