The Austrian Occupation of Hungary (1849-1867)

Category:  World Coins
Owner:  Jaelus
Last Modified:  11/1/2022
Set Description
This is a type set covering the period between the failed Hungarian War of Independence (1848-1849) and the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, during which Hungary was an occupied territory of Austria. During this period, the three Hungarian mints struck Austrian types using mintmarks under the Austrian system as follows:
Austrian mintmark B = Hungarian mintmark KB (Kormocbanya)
Austrian mintmark E = Hungarian/Transylvanian mintmark GYF (Gyulafehervar)
Austrian mintmark G = Hungarian mintmark NB (Nagybanya)

The occupation period coinage can be further subdivided into two major sub-periods as follows:
The Gulden Period (1849-1856) - Pre-decimalized coinage
The Florin Period (1857-1867) - Decimalized coinage

Further, significant changes to the legends on the coinage occurred in both 1866 and 1867, making two sets of one-year types to reflect territories lost by the Austrian Empire. These events were contributing factors to the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867, during which Hungary regained much of its autonomy.

Set Goals
The goal of this collection is to acquire an uncirculated example of each type from a Hungarian branch mint (B, E, or G) with the best eye appeal possible. This is an extremely difficult set to complete, as while many of these types were issued with high mintage numbers from the Vienna mint, they were not plentifully struck from the Hungarian branch mints, and often were not struck for more than one year. In fact, more than half of the types in this set are one-year types, many of which are extremely challenging. Two of the types do not have any NGC certified examples in the census at atll.

View Coin Copper 3 Kreuzer (1851) KM-2193 AUSTRIA - EMPIRE PART 2 3K 1851B NGC MS 63 BN This is the largest of the five one-year copper types of 1851 and is the most difficult to find an example of in mint state. Even my broker in Budapest for years said the best they've ever seen was an AU, but then this example popped up raw on eBay US of all places (doesn't it just surprise you sometimes). And here it is a lovely brown example with pleasing red tones and gorgeous surfaces. This is the only mint state example I've seen on the market, and I jumped at the chance to own one in this condition.
