Set Description
This set is a placeholder for coins listed as "Germany - States - 2".

Set Goals
The complexity and variety of German coins amazes me. My goal is to get a decent collection of different coins from the various states then perhaps pursue a more focused collection on a particular region as I learn a little more.

There are so many coins from Germany that it's easy to find interesting coins with a unique design that can be tied to a piece of history. It's almost too easy and my bank account is the limiting factor, not the coins.

View Coin   GERMANY - STATES - 2 Kingdom Ag 1/24T 1842 S S HANNOVER KM 178.2 NGC XF 40 A mid-grade coin from Hannover. Minted in 1842 under Carl Schulter. Hannover eventually became absorbed by Prussia. The photo is a little washed out. The coin is darker and has more detail than the photo shows. I need to take new photos.

View Coin   GERMANY - STATES - 2 1NG 1865 B SAXONY NGC MS 62 Minted under the Reign of King John of Saxony. Saxony, like Bavaria, sided with Austria in the war with Prussia. After Prussia's victory Saxony becomes part of the Prussian Empire and a unified Germany begins to take shape. All of this happens under the reign of King John.

This coin is a good example of many German States Coins. It has a very interesting coat of arms on one side and a rather mundane obverse with little decoration at all.
View Coin   GERMANY - STATES - 2 3K 1847 BAVARIA NGC MS 64 3 Kreuzer minted in Bavaria under the rule of Ludwig I. The coin is rather plain with the coat of arms being the most interesting aspect of the coin.

Ludwig was a strong monarch with a love of women and the arts. One most notable creation of Ludwig I is the temple of Walhalla where Great people of Germanic culture are enshrined. While he was certainly an eccentric, he would be foreshadowed by his Grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig adbicated rather than submit to a constitutional monarchy that would limit his powers.
View Coin   GERMANY - STATES - 2 1K 1871 BAVARIA NGC MS 65 1 Kreuzer minted in 1871, the year of German Unification. The Bavarian State was under the rule of Ludwig II (Grandson of Ludwig I) who ruled between 1864 and 1886. Ludwig II lived in a fantasy land and was a major patron of Wagner. He is most famous for his castle Neuschwanstein which has probably done as much for Bavarian tourism as Oktoberfest. Unfortunately Ludwig II's life and reign was cut short. His body was found in a lake along with his doctor. Whether it was suicide or murder is still contested.
