Barber Seated Liberty Patterns of 1870
Lets face the other way!

( Click on thumbnail to enlarge image)

With Longacre passing in 1869, William Barber was made Chief Engraver of the mint. Barber had engraved many of Longacre's designs previously including the Liberty Bust Standard silver pieces of 1869, Barber now had the opportunity to created his own footprint. He did so starting with a unique series of Liberty Seated patterns of 1870. These patterns where a seated Liberty facing to our left, with Liberty supporting a shield with her right hand an oliva branch in her right. The Liberty pole is free standing behind the shield. This appeared to be a spin from the existing seated Liberty design. These patterns developed to support the "STANDARD SILVER" initiative where the reverse motifs ( open wreath with a denomination in the center and "STANDARD" at the top) as used on the Liberty portrait pieces for the 10, 25 and 50 Cent pieces. Barber extended the design features to the 3 Cent Silver and half dime denomination which seem strange as these pieces were already slated for extinction. He did expand the series upward to create the One Dollar Standard silver piece while creating a pattern for the Longacre Indian Princess Motif design as well for the One Dollar piece.

Two pattern designs for the series were struck as 2 reverse die designs were deployed. Besides the STANDARD SILVER design, the obverse were paired and struck using the regular reverse dies of each denomination for the year 1870.

The Seated Obverse had 2 distinctive designs- the H10C and Dime Or 5 CENTS and 10 Cents had United States –Of America split on each side of Miss Liberty however the 25 Cent, 50 C and 1$ deployed 13 Stars around Miss liberty. This design combined with the STANDARD SILVER reverses were an illogical combination as they yield pieces without a country.

1870 3SC
Judd-799, Pollock-886
Rarity: Low R.7, PR65 RB CAC Endorsed

Struck in copper with reeded Edge

Obverse: In this design by Chief Engraver William Barber, Liberty is seated left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1870 below. Liberty supports a shield with her right hand and holds an olive branch in her left. A free standing liberty pole is behind the portrait, and a scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses the shield.
Reverse: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue silver three-cent pieces.

Comment: Vivid hues of rose, blue, gold blend together over richly mirrored copper. The fields are ablaze with reflectivity that really makes the patination pop. Well struck and very nicely preserved, this coin has exceptional eye appeal - wonderfully original Gem.
There are fewer than a dozen examples of Judd-799 extant per the website uspatterns.com, the type originally distributed to contemporary collectors as part of pattern Proof sets.
Diameter: 0.609 inches. Die alignment: 170°

Struck in Aluminum with plain edge

Obverse: The Barber Standard Silver design with Liberty seated with hand resting on a shield and Liberty pole behind.

Reverse: The reverse displays 5 CENTS surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn with STANDARD across the top.

Comment:
Only two pieces are known of this rarity. Each side is bright with deeply mirrored fields that set up the "black" background for the frosted devices, producing the cameo effect. Brilliant throughout and unoxidized.

The US Pattern.com site states that there may be only 2 or 3 known pieces including a piece referenced from the Brand collection (journal #14286 and/or 92500:1042). One of these pieces is ex Farouk, Caldwell (B/R 11/73 Rothert sale) specimen. This piece and the Farouk piece may be the only example auctioned in the last 50 years.

Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Obverse: The Barber Standard Silver design with Liberty seated with hand resting on a shield and Liberty pole behind.

Reverse: The reverse is the standard half dime die.

Comment:
The obverse design Liberty appears to have only one leg, and the Liberty pole springs up vertically with nothing holding it up , nonetheless displays considerable artistic merit.
About a dozen are known of these pieces, which were sold in complete sets. The surfaces are bright with variegated brown, reddish-brown, and lilac toning.

Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge

Obverse: A seated Liberty faces left while supporting a shield with a scroll inscribed with LIBERTY on her right side and holding an olive branch in her left hand. A Phyrgian cap and pole are suspended in the background. UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA occupies the periphery with the date, 1870, in exergue.

Reverse: A regular 1870 half dime reverse die was used to strike the Judd-815 through Judd-820 patterns. HALF DIME is enclosed within a wreath of corn, wheat, oak, and maple, tied with a bow at the bottom.

Comment: The surfaces are bright and show no traces of oxidation. The devices are thickly frosted against the deeply reflective fields. An interesting lintmark (as coined) is located in the left obverse field. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population:

The acquisition of a Judd-819 pattern--currently considered a High R.7 variety with less than six examples known--in any condition is cause to celebrate. US Patterns states they believe only 3 – 4 may exists. Pollock identified a mere three specimens in his 1994 pattern treatise, inclusive of Lemus piece. The Dannreuther-Garrett compilation of auction records between 1990 and 2005 failed to record a single instance of a Judd-819 pattern--an astonishing testimonial to the absolute rarity of this issue.

My own records dating back to 1969 shows only 8 appearances. This piece showed up 4 times, and the Simpson, piece was the Reed Hawn Collection (Stack's, 3/1977), lot 767 , and the Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Heritage 2009 - that made up other 3 of the appearances. The Bowers & Ruddy Jul 1981 (William R. Sieck Collection) Lot 68 was also the Farouk Sept 1954 piece and makes up 1. The Christies Sept 1988 sale lot 584 might be this example

Comment:
Glimmering surfaces radiate lilac and magenta coloration on both sides of this Premium Gem proof. The strike is expectedly bold.
The USPatterns.com website opines that approximately 12 examples of Judd-833 exist in all grades. Comment: Only three or four examples of this type are known. The present PR66+ Cameo offering is almost certainly the finest among them, with fully brilliant surfaces showing stark contrast. Thickly frosted devices are set against glassy, contact-free fields. The USPatterns.com website believes that approximately 3 known examples of Judd-836. Pollock (1994) was able to document 2 specimens. Reverse: The reverse has 25 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a thick agricultural wreath with STANDARD in small letters at the top.

Comment:
This Choice Proof has excellent contrast between the fields and devices, with pale champagne toning. A highly attractive example. Blazing silver white mirrors beam boldly all over. The devices stand out in stark, sharp contrast to the surrounding fields. While some light lines are noted in the fields, the eye appeal is unmarred by unsightly mishandling or splotchy toning. A minor spot at 7:30 and 10:00 on the obverse rim, as well as on the 7 on the date serve as pedigree hallmarks.

Reverse: The reverse has 25 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a thick agricultural wreath with STANDARD in small letters at the top.

Comment:
Judd-878 is part of the curious series of 1870 patterns with an unusual paring of an obverse and reverse that yields a coin without a country identification,. The "Brown Cameo" designation is not common but is accurate. The surfaces are teal and evenly balanced from side-to-side. Comments: The same design as Judd-935, but with a plain edge that was produced by a smooth, unreeded collar. Like Judd-935, about 15 or 16 examples of this copper pattern are known.

Comment: Doubtless sold as part of an exotic-metal set, this aluminum Gem Cameo proof has excellent remaining luster and distinct contrast. An impressive GEM! The planchet is problem free and the glassy mirrors are deep, crystal clear, clean, and have intense reflectivity (unlike many aluminum patterns which can come with serious problems). The uspatterns.com website notes the following about Judd-1007: "This is William Barber's seated liberty design combined with the regular reverse die. Sets were available in silver, copper and aluminum with either reeded or plain edges. It is not known what price the Mint sold these for. This obverse was also combined with the 'Standard Silver' wreath reverse." The website notes just three or so examples are known in any grade.
