US Silver Assay Medals 1867 - 1963

Category:  Token & Medals
Owner:  Fisk the Cat
Last Modified:  7/18/2022
Set Description
Until it was abolished by Jimmy Carter in 1980, the Assay Commission met annually to confirm that our nation's coinage contained the amount of gold and silver as specified by law. The first medals were issued in 1860, but many years did not have issues struck in Silver. This set will gather one example from each year where a silver medal was produced. This set comprises all of the known officially produced US Mint struck assay medals. The medal does not have to be the officially presented variety to that year's assay commissioners, but this set does exclude unique pieces such as the 1892/1892 mules. It follows the PCGS Registry listing for Silver Assay medals but includes a couple of extra pieces that while rare, are not unique.

Set Goals
Obtain one of each non-unique medals issued by the US Mint to commemorate the Annual Assay Commission meeting. Specimens with pedigree and eye appeal are the primary objectives.
