REGULAR AWARD MEDALS
The award medals for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition were designed by Adolph Alexander Weinman (designer of the Mercury Dime and Liberty Walking Half Dollar) and struck in Bronze by the United States Mint at Philadelphia. The regular Award Medals were produced in four different award levels; "Bronze Medal", "Silver Medal", "Gold Medal" and "Grand Prize." Each award level was struck in a different shape; round for the "Bronze Medal", square for the "Silver Medal", triangular for the "Gold Medal", and a shield shape for the "Grand Prize" medal. In addition to the award medals the mint also struck a bronze "Commemorative Medal" in a triangular shape. All of these medals share a common central obverse and reverse design. It was not uncommon for recipients of the "Silver Medal" to privately have their medals silver plated. Likewise recipients of the "Gold Medal" and "Grand Prize" medal frequently had their medals privately gold plated.
Mintage figures for the regular Award Medals are as follows: Bronze Medal (10,000), Silver Medal (11,500), Gold Medal (9,000), Grand Prize (3,300), and Commemorative Medal (6,000).
OBVERSE DESIGN
The obverse of the medal depicts two female figures above the date MCMIV (1904). The tall taller figure is Columbia, with her arms spread wide holding the United States flag. The youthful maiden at her side represents the Louisiana Purchase Territory. Emblematic of her reception into the union, the maiden is divesting herself of the cloak of France, the material decorated with bees, the emblem of Napoleon. In the background is the rising sun, marking the dawn of a new era of progress to the nation. Encircling the two figures are the words "Universal Exposition - Saint Louis - United States of America."
REVERSE DESIGN
An American Eagle, wings outstretched sits upon a tablet. The tablet is inscribed with the award level and "LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION". Below the tablet are two dolphins symbolizing the nations' eastern and western boundaries, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
PHILIPPINE EXHIBIT
The 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis, provided an opportunity for the U.S. government to show off their new colony. The Philippine Exhibit was mammoth with a small Laguna Bay, Walled City, Visayan, and Moro Villages.
PHILIPPINE EXHIBIT AWARD MEDALS
Philippine Exhibit award medals are known in four levels; "Bronze Medal", "Silver Medal", "Gold Medal," and "Grand Prize". The only difference between the regular issue award medals and Philippine Exhibit award medals is the inscription changes on the cartouche or panel on the reverse of each medal. The tablet on the reverse of the Philippine Exhibit award medals are inscribed with the award level, " PHILIPPINE EXHIBIT" and "LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION". All of the Philippine Exhibit medals are rare and have much lower mintages than their counter-part regular award medal. Mintages for the Philippine Exhibit award medals are as follows: "Bronze Medal" (975), "Silver Medal" (725), "Gold Medal" (600), and "Grand Prize" (100).

The 1944 One Centavo uses the same obverse and reverse designs as the pre-war One Centavo but has a different wartime composition.
The pre-war One Centavo was struck in a bronze alloy of 95% copper, and 5% zinc and tin. Both copper and tin were important strategic materials during wartime. To conserve tin, the wartime composition of the One Centavo was changed to a brass alloy of 95% copper and 5% zinc. This is the same alloy the mint used to produce U.S. wartime pennies dated 1944-1946. The mint produced this alloy by combining ingots of pure copper with salvaged 70% copper shell casings.
During the World War II Japanese occupation of the Philippines the Japanese confiscated coins held by banks and in circulation, melted them down and shipped them back to Japan to be used in their war effort. The few pre-war coins that escaped the melting pots were hoarded and hid away until after the war. With coins absent from circulation most daily commerce was conducted with low denomination paper currency (Emergency or Guerilla Currency) printed by Guerrilla military units, local municipalities, or Military and Civilian Currency Boards authorized by General MacArthur or the Commonwealth government-in-exile under President Quezon.
During the Japanese occupation there was a very active resistance movement in the Philippines, and allied intelligence was very much aware, of the economic situation in the islands, and the need to bring new coins and currency with them when they liberated the Philippines.
In preparation for General MacArthur’s return to the Philippines, the Treasury Department ordered the San Francisco Mint to strike millions of One Centavo coins. When American forces liberated the Philippines in 1944 - 1945 they brought with them Fifty-Eight Million 1944-S One Centavo coins.
This boldly struck FULL RED GEM is a die variety with the base of the last 4 missing at the left side (Allen number 3.06b).

Due to the need to replace nearly all the coinage necessary for the Philippine economy dies were used beyond their normal limits and quality was sacrificed in favor of quantity. As a result, the 1944-D and 1945-D U.S. Philippine Ten Centavos are typically weakly struck particularly on the reverse.

The1938 One Centavo is typically.very weakly struck and well struck examples are scarce and difficult to find. This attractive Red-Brown GEM is an above average example. It has a boldly struck obverse and the reverse is well struck except for a slight weakness in the center of the Commonwealth seal and on the left side of the scroll.

The obverse design of the Murphy-Quezon Peso features portraits of the first Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon and U.S. Governor General Frank Murphy. The reverse design depicts the official seal of "The Commonwealth of the Philippines".
The Mintage of the 1936M Murphy-Quezon Peso was 10,000 coins, however, the actual number of existing coins is far less as many of these coins were crated and thrown into Manila Bay, near Corregidor, in 1942 to avoid seizure by the invading forces of Japan.

The 1944 D over S Twenty Centavos is unique among USA/Philippine Die Varities in that it is the only time during the 43 year history of U.S./Philippine coinage that a mint mark was ever over-punched with the mint mark from a different mint. The combined NGC/PCGS certified population for this important die variety in MS66 as 11 coins with only 4 specimens graded higher. The NGC population for this coin in MS66 is 6 coins with only 4 specimens graded higher. This specimen is a fully struck, untoned SUPERB GEM.

This attractive Red GEM is a well preserved example of the Pre-World War II Commonwealth of the Philippines One Centavo. The obverse design is the same as the 1903 - 1944 One Centavo and is boldly struck, The reverse design featuring the Seal of the CommonWealth of the Philippines was adopted for use on all regular issue US Philippine coins in 1937 and is typically weakly struck on Pre-World War II coinage. Although this specimen shows weakness in the center of the commonwealth seal it is better struck than average.

The 1944-S One Centavo uses the same obverse and reverse designs as the pre-war One Centavo but has a different wartime composition.
The pre-war One Centavo was a bronze alloy of 95% copper, and 5% zinc and tin. Both copper and tin are important strategic materials during wartime. In order to conserve tin the wartime composition of the One Centavo was changed to a brass alloy of 95% copper and 5% zinc. This is the same alloy the mint used for the production of U.S. wartime pennies dated 1944-1946. The mint produced this alloy by combining ingots of pure copper with salvaged 70% copper shell casings.
During the 1942 through 1944 Japanese occupation of the Philippines, nearly all coins disappeared from circulation. In the occupied areas the Japanese collected all of the coins, melted them down and shipped them back to Japan. The few pre-war coins that escaped the melting pots were hoarded and hid away until after the war. Most daily commerce was conducted with low denomination paper currency (Emergency or Guerilla Currency) printed by Guerrilla military units, local municipalities, or Military and Civilian Currency Boards authorized by General MacArthur or the Commonwealth government-in-exile under President Quezon.
During the Japanese occupation there was a very active resistance movement in the Philippines, and allied inteligence was very much aware, of the economic situation in the islands, and the need to bring new coins and currency with them when they liberated the Philippines.
In preparation for General MacArthurs return to the Philippines, the Treasury Department ordered the San Francisco Mints to strike millions of One Centavo coins. When American forces liberated the Philippines in 1944 - 1945 they brought with them Fifty Eight Million 1944-S One Centavo coins.
In addition to the normal 1944-S One Centavo (Allen 3.06) three other die varities exisit for this date. There are two different Double Die Reverse varities (Allen 3.06a and 3.06aa) as well as a relatively common die variety (Allen 3.06b) with the Base of the Last 4 Missing on the Left Side. Although this specimen is not certified as a variety it clearly has the Base of the Last 4 Missing on the Left Side.
This attractive Full Red Premium GEM is boldly struck on both the obverse and reverse.

All Culion Leper Colony coins were routinely disinfected by the Philippine Health Service. The caustic chemicals used in the disinfection process had an extremely deleterious effect on aluminum. By 1922 it was apparent that the Aluminum Cullion Leper Colony coinage of 1913 and 1920 were just not holding up and a more acid resistant alloy needed to be found. Starting in 1922 all Culion Leper Colony coins were struck in a Copper-Nickel alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel.
The obverse design of the 1922 Cullion Leper Colony 20 Centavos consists of a caduceus, the words "PHILIPPINE HEALTH SERVICE" and the date "1922". The reverse has the denomination "20 CENTAVOS" and the words "CULION LEPER COLONY PHILIPPINE ISLANDS". An incuse monogram PM (Philippine Mint) is stamped between 20 and CENTAVOS.

Paul VI was pope from June 21, 1963 - August 6, 1978.
Pope Paul VI (Latin: Paulus VI; Italian: Paolo VI), was born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini (26 September 1897 - 6 August 1978), reigned as Pope from 21 June 1963 to his death in 1978. Succeeding Pope John XXIII, he continued the Second Vatican Council which he closed in 1965, implementing its numerous reforms, and fostered improved ecumenical relations with Eastern Orthodox and Protestants, which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements. Montini served in the Vatican's Secretariat of State from 1922 to 1954. While in the Secretariat of State, Montini and Domenico Tardini were considered as the closest and most influential colleagues of Pope Pius XII, who in 1954 named him Archbishop of Milan, the largest Italian diocese. Montini later became the Secretary of the Italian Bishops Conference. John XXIII elevated him to the College of Cardinals in 1958, and after the death of John XXIII, Montini was considered one of his most likely successors.
Upon his election to the papacy, Montini took the name Paul VI. He re-convened the Second Vatican Council, which was automatically closed with the death of John XXIII, and gave it priority and direction. After the council had concluded its work, Paul VI took charge of the interpretation and implementation of its mandates, often walking a thin line between the conflicting expectations of various groups within Catholicism. The magnitude and depth of the reforms affecting all fields of Church life during his pontificate exceeded similar reform policies of his predecessors and successors. Paul VI was a Marian devotee, speaking repeatedly to Marian congresses and mariological meetings, visiting Marian shrines and issuing three Marian encyclicals. Following his famous predecessor Saint Ambrose of Milan, he named Mary as the Mother of the Church during the Second Vatican Council. Paul VI sought dialogue with the world, with other Christians, other religions, and atheists, excluding nobody. He saw himself as a humble servant for a suffering humanity and demanded significant changes of the rich in North America and Europe in favour of the poor in the Third World. His positions on birth control, promulgated most famously in the 1968 encyclical Humanae vitae, and other political issues, were often controversial, especially in Western Europe and North America.
Pope Benedict XVI declared that the late pontiff lived a life of heroic virtue and conferred the title of Venerable upon him. Pope Francis beatified him on 19 October 2014 after the recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession and he was canonized on October 14, 2018. Since 2019 his liturgical feast has been celebrated on May 29.

In 1907 the rising price of silver necessitated a reduction in the fineness, size, and weight of U.S. Philippine silver coinage. The size of the Twenty Centavos was reduced from 23 mm to 20 mm, which was only .5 mm smaller than the then circulating Five Centavo coin. Since all U.S. Philippine coins used the same basic reverse design mix-ups were bound to happen. In 1918 a Twenty Centavo reverse die was accidently paired with a regular Five Centavo obverse die. The reverse of the resulting Mule coin has a smaller date and wider shield than the normal Five Centavo coin. Although the exact number of Muled coins that were produced before the error was discovered is unknown few specimens survive today and most are well worn. Mint state examples of the 1918-S Five Centavo Mule are very rare. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 71 examples of the 1918-S Mule in any grade and only 17 of these have been Mint State. Of the Mint State examples only eight have graded Choice Mint State of higher.
This sharply defined light gray example has brilliant luster and excellent eye appeal. This specimen is pedigreed from the famous Mahal Collection (also known as the "Just Having Fun Collection").

1903 U.S. PHILIPPINES FIVE CENTAVOS PCGS PR67+
This Superb Gem has outstanding eye appeal with beautiful toning and seemingly flawless surfaces. At the lofty grade of PR67+ it is extremely conditionly rare and ranks among the finest known proof examples of its denomination. U.S. Philippine Proof Sets were only produced for five years (1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, & 1908) for a combined total of only 5,384 sets. Of the origional proof production many were either lost during World War II or degraded due to improper storage or cleaning.
PCGS and NGC combined have graded only a miniscule number of U.S. Philippine Five Centavos of any year in Proof 67+ or above. The Combined PCGS/NGC Population for all years in PF67+ is a mere.five specimens with only four examples graded higher (4/17/2023).

The 150th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence was the occasion for an international fair held in Philadelphia in 1926. To help raise funds for financing the fair, special issues of half dollars and quarter eagles were authorized by congress. For the first time, a portrait of a president appeared on a coin struck during his own lifetime. presidents Calvin coolidge and George Washington are depicted on the obverse of the half dollar. the reverse bears an accurate model of the Liberty Bell. John R. sinnock, chief engraver of the United States Mint, modeled the sesquicentennial coins from designs by John Fredrick Lewis. The dies were in very low relief, causing much loss of detail.
