The quarters were issued 5 per year in order of the state’s entry into the union. Delaware, “The First State”, started the series and proof versions of this coin were issued in both clad and 90% silver. The Delaware silver proofs had a significantly lower mintage than the clad versions making them scarcer particularly in Proof 70 Ultra Cameo (PF 70 UC).

The reverse features the statue “Commonwealth” that sits atop Pennsylvania’s state capitol dome in Harrisburg, an outline of the state, the State motto “Virtue, Liberty, Independence”, and a keystone honoring Pennsylvania’s nickname “The Keystone State.” The keystone imagery links back to Pennsylvania’s location as the middle or keystone state of the original 13.

The reverse theme is “Spirit of Courage” and features Helen Keller. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen Keller overcame the lost of her sight and hearing to become a world-renowned author, lecturer, political activist, and disability rights advocate. In addition to an image of Keller, the reverse displays her name in braille. A magnolia is portrayed on the right side of the reverse and a long leaf pine branch on the left.

I visited Helen Keller’s birthplace, known as Ivy Green, on October 21, 2022 and took a picture of the original plaque announcing the selection of the Helen Keller design to represent Alabama’s State Quarter.

The reverse features the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and a schooner at sea with a couple of seagulls drifting about the ship. An Eastern White Pine, the state tree, is also featured. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse marks the entrance to Muscongus Bay and Johns Bay and is one of Maine’s most popular attractions. The schooner is fashioned to represent “Victory Chimes” the last remaining Chesapeake Ram schooner and a national historic landmark residing at Rockland, Maine.

The reverse features rice stalks (Arkansas is the leading producer of rice in the United States), a diamond, representing the Crater of Diamonds State Park, and a Mallard Duck flying over the many lakes of the state.

I visited the Crater of the Diamonds State Park on October 13, 2022 to try my hand at diamond mining but, alas, no diamonds were found.
