Category:  Varieties
Owner:  Richard Edward

Set Description
Here is how I have broken down what I see to be the JFK types.
1. 1964 or 1964-D 90% silver business strike
2. 1964 proof, 90% silver, Philadelphia proof
3. 1964 proof, 90% silver, accent hair, Philadelphia proof
4. 1965-1970, 40% silver, business strike
5. 1965-1967 40% silver SMS coins
6. 1968-1970 40% silver,San Francisco proof
7. 1971-present clad business strike P and D mint
8. 1971-present clad proof San Francisco mint
9. 1976 Bicentennial design clad business strike P and D mint
10.1976 Bicentennial design clad proof, San Francisco mint
11.1976 Bicentennial design 40% silver, BU, San Francisco
12.1976 Bicentennial design 40% silver, proof, S mint
13.1992-present 90%silver proof, San Francisco mint
14.1998 90% silver specimen proof, San Francisco proof
15.2005-present clad satin finish from mint sets, P and D
Those are the categories I have defined as of now. Other categories I have considered are:
a. 1970-D -40% silver BU released in mint sets only
b. 1987-P and 1987-D, clad coins released in mint sets only
c. 2002-present business strike coins not released for commerce (they are not like the current mint set coins.0
Perhaps the last 3 categories are not appropriate for a complete type set. I would appreciate any feedback.

Set Goals
A set of Kennedy half dollars representing the many varieties of this coin in 1964. I am looking to assemble a complete"type set". The registry type sets often have 6 slots for different Kennedy types. I have expanded that idea, and have attemted an all inclusive look at the many types of the JFK half dollar

View Coin 40% silver BU business strike 1965-1970 United States 50C 1966 NGC MS 66 I found this coin last summer in a dusty 2X2 holder in a bin at a flea market in Austin, TX. I paid $2.00 for it. I sent it in to NGC because I could not find a certified 1966 (non SMS) anywhere. I was shocked when the coin was graded MS-66 ; 19 coins at MS66 and 1 in MS67 in the NGC census. You never know where your next registry coin may be...

View Coin 2005-present, satin finish, P and D mints United States 50C 2006 P SMS PCGS MS 69 Beginning in 2005 all coins in U.S. mint sets were produced with a so called satin finish. In my opinion these coins are quite attractive. They are easily distinguishable from business strike issues. Many of the coins have graded in high mint states (MS68, MS69)
