Part of My Heritage Set
Bombing of Pearl Harbor
My mother was six years old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th,1941 . She hide in a bush on the side of the road during the bombing. My grandfather was bringing his boat into harbor near waikiki that morning and was shot at and eventually the navy subscribed his boat, installed steel plate on her and made a patrol boat out of her.
This coin commemorates my family and all they went thru during the years after the start of the war. Many served and thankfully all survived to return home to Hawaii and raised my generation. Now it is 2011, ten years post 911 and my son raises my grandson at a time when the nation is once again at war. My families history is repeating itself and my neices and nephews now serve. Ten years post pearl harbor the government was worried that our economy would suffer by any overt national observance commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attack as Japans reconstruction was fueling our economy, so the government downplayed it saying the country needed to move on. Conversely 911 observances were about rembrance of the fallen and the call is never to forget.
I can only say from my perspective, being Hawaiian, that I have never forgotten.
