Charles Kaufmann, my Great-Great-Grandfather, was a merchant who immigrated from Germany in the early 1850s, and opened a shop in Brooklyn, New York. This coin is one of two coins I inherited from my paternal Grandmother. She kept all sorts of things hidden away, only to be revealed after her passing. These coins were found together with a photo of a large group in front of the store, out of which I can easily find my Great-Grandparents. I am thinking that these coins were saved in the store, possibly displayed as we see dollar bills saved today, as a good luck momento of the first money taken in sales. I received the coins in no protective holder, and soot black in color. Conservation of the coins done by NCS.

This Indian Head cent was saved by my Great Grandparents as a memento to commemorate the birth of my Grandfather, Clyde Adams. The coin was passed to my Grandmother after many years of improper storage, and obvious exposure to unwanted elements. Grandma Alice was a coin collector, and thankfully, she knew not to try to clean the coin. She placed the coin in a hard plastic cent holder to prevent any further damage, and this is the condition it was in when I inherited it. The coin was dirty and had some sort of greenish residue on it, which is why I wanted to have it conserved before being encapsulated. The AU grade is not surprising, since it was removed from circulation in the year it was minted. I am disappointed in the environmental damage, but it serves as a lesson that proper storage and care of a coin is important to its long term condition. Still in all, it is a nice looking coin in hand, and a nice legacy to pass on to later generations.
