1486. AUSTRIA. Tyrol. Guldiner (Guldengroschen). Sigismund (1439-90). Dav-8087; Levinson IV-49a; Frey-274. First of the large silver dated talers originating from central Europe, the type is unanimously considered the father of the Taler coinage that soon followed all through central Europe. The type is relatively rare with perhaps no more than 160 known specimens most of which have been mounted or tooled. Struck from silver mined using newer technology at what had been considered depleted deposits in Tyrol. A magnificent example of the type with glossy anthracite colored tone and a cornucopia of remaining detail for the assigned grade. The Count's effigy is clear and retains much of the facial details, with a reverse that is simply breath-taking, with every shield in the periphery fully struck and well defined. The knight's banner can clearly be seen flapping in the air above his charging horse. Everything about the coin, from the iconography to the state of preservation, combine to create a coin of the highest desirability. An opportunity that should not be missed for any advanced collector of Austrian Talers or related material. NGC EF-40.

1518. Austria. Maximilian I (1493-1519) Guldiner or Taler. Klagenfurt Mint.
42mm, 28.25 g, 7h). DAV-8007; Egg-33; Voglhuber-24. Obv: Collared and mantled bust left, wearing cap. Rev: Three crowned coats-of-arms over eight coats-of-arms, the lowermost crowned. A RARE early Taler, preserved far better than most seen, with an even strike that sharply details the designs and only slight evidence of softening over the highpoints. A touch of mottled tone over the obverse adds an admirable aged look to the overall appearance. NGC AU-55.

ND (ca. 1574-1575). Ferdinand I (1521-64) Taler. Hall Mint. Posthumously struck coinage. DAV-8030. Obv: Crowned, armored and bearded half-length figure, (with elderly features) right, holding sword and scepter. Rev: Single headed heraldic eagle left, with shield including Austrian (stripes of Hapsburg) and Spanish (castle of Castile) arms. A rolling-dies mint was introduced in Austria during the rule of Ferdinand II (after 1564), which led previously to the wrong conclusion, that this rare type is a posthumous strike. Due to further research and numismatic discussions, the origin of the so called "Walzentaler" ("rolling-dies thaler") became more likely to be Augsburg, where the Emperor spent few more few months (January 1555 - September 1555). A nice specimen of this rare type, with raising popularity, especially after the discovery of its German-City-Mint origin!. Superb condition for this rare type. PCGS MS-64.

AUSTRIA. ND (1601-04). 2 Taler. Hall Mint. Archduke Ferdinand (1564-95) Taler. DAV-8119. M/T-308/310 (Die 1/3). Engraver: Peter Hartenbeck. "Reiherhut" type that appears in European auctions from time to time with relative scarcity. A few tiny natural planchet flaws on the archduke's portrait but fully struck. Lovely old cabinet tone displaying an attractive dove grey with a heather purple sheen and highlights amongst the devices of gold and red hues. This is generally considered to be a posthumous issue, dated 1595. Davenport notes a considerable number of talers and multiple talers struck for the archduke, DAV-8088 thru DAV-8103, all without dates. Good eye appeal and very attractive. NGC AU-53.

1590. Austria. Rudolph II (1576-1612) "Three Emperors" Taler. Joachimsthal or Prague Mint. Dav-8105 (under Archduke Ferdinand as Hall mint), Voglhuber-86 (same), Markl-1953, Moser-Tursky-Unl., Donebauer-Unl., Dietiker-Unl., Halacka-Type 1. Paul Hoffman (?) as mintmaster. Among the earliest emissions from this highly sought-after series-firmly attributable to the reign of Rudolf II-this offering expresses an attractive antique appearance coupled with splendid eye appeal. While light circulation wear exists atop the highpoints, in-line with the assigned designation, a wonderful clarity of detail is expressed throughout-from the finer points of the emperors' hair and beards, down to the Orders of the Golden Fleece-with a flan that beautifully mixes age-old, dove-gray tone with shades of sky-blue. Presently the single finest certified example at NGC by 13 grade points, with none yet seen by PCGS, collectors could hardly hope for a more fitting representative of the type. NGC AU-58.

Traditionally assigned to the mint of Hall under the reign of Ferdinand as Archduke, Halacka (1987) has reassigned the issue to Rudolf II at Joachimsthal, though Prague is also a likely candidate. As Hall only produced coins from roller dies at this time, it can be ruled out with no uncertainty as the minting location.
