At the time of purchase (November 2022), not just Top Pop but only one certified by either NGC or PCGS.

From the sale's catalogue: "Mexico City, Mexico, 1/2 real, Charles-Joanna, "Late Series," assayer O to right, oM to left, o between monogram, motto P-LV-S, reworked B-punch for R in CAROLVS (rare), NGC XF 45, finest and only example in the NGC census. Nesmith-107; Cal-54; S-M10; KM-6.5. 1.65 grams. Mistakes abound with assayer-O coins, this one like 1R lot 382 in this auction in having an unusual appearance of the R in CAROLVS and RGS as a reworked B-punch. Nesmith did not make note of it, perhaps because many coins have partial or unreadable legends, but this is clear, the coin itself darkly toned and slightly out of round. Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage (stated on label). Accompanied by original tag or holder."

This coin belongs to the favourite section “Coins you have never seen before, coins you are not likely to see ever again”. From the famous collection by Manuel Vidal Quadras y Ramón (lot 6881 Vol II page 180 plate 26-6). Coins from the Early Series of the Charles and Johanna series for Mexico City are all rare, particularly lower denominations as the 4 reales were minted in larger numbers to ship to Spain. Assayer F is perhaps the rarest of all assayers during in the series. His name and tenure dates are unknown. Cori Sedwick Downing, in her paper “The Charles and Joanna Coinage of Mexico City, 1536-1571: A Research Study on the Early Series and Introduction to the Late Series” (unknown to me the date of publication) wrote that Assayer F minted ½, 1, 2, and 4 reales. “There are approximately 26 coins known in collections and auctions, with the majority from the “Golden Fleece wreck” (ca. 1550), one from the “Ines de Soto wreck” (ca. 1557), and none from the Spanish 1554 Fleet (Padre Island)”. She describes the main type of 1-real coins: Latin M-F flanking shield and left-leaning rhomboid banner between pillars. In her paper “An Overview of Charles and Johanna Coinage from Mexico City Mint” (USMexNA Journal 2017) she wrote ”I have cataloged only 36 Assayer F coins, in all denominations”. As we can see, there were few more coins described between both papers. Kent Ponterio in his paper “The Coinage of Mexico Struck During the Reign of Charles and Johanna” (revised June 2009) he stated that Assayer F is the third assayer of the Early Series. “Coins of this assayer are anywhere from extremely rare to unique” and suggests he was an interim assayer sometime in 1540 or 1541. He suggests 3 possible candidates: Francisco de Loaysa, Esteban Franco (also favoured by Ms Downing), or less likely, Francisco Rodriguez (from the Santo Domingo mint).

At the time of purchase (December 2020) it is the only real graded by NGC for the assayer and type, therefore Top Pop.

From the collection of Clyde Hubbard auctioned by Daniel F Sedwick. At the time of purchase (May 2022) only one graded for the type, hence Top Pop.

Assayer G, Juan Gutierrez. Assayer G took the coins of Charles and Johana from the Early to the Late Series, this coin being of course, an Early Series example. This coin is clearly an oMo-oM/Mo (and perhaps there is more under the M, possibly an F (as assayer F was the predecessor of G). The over mint mark is not noticed by NGC.

Legends are not well represented, but the coin is rare enough that the issue is forgiven.

From the sale's catalogue: "Mexico City, Mexico, 1 real, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer G between bottoms of pillars, motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel with single annulets on either side, rare, NGC VF 25, finest and only example in NGC census. Nesmith-9 type/9; Cal-61; S-M2; KM unl (6 for type). 3.30 grams. A deeply toned example with all details visible, struck slightly off-center and purchased after Nesmith's book was published, otherwise he would have listed this coin as a separate (albeit very similar) variety to his 9. NGC #6448168-047. Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage (stated on label) and to the Almanzar auction of August 1972, lot 2215. Accompanied by original tag or holder from Clyde Hubbard."

Nice uncirculated hammered coin from the "Late Series" of the Carolus and Iohanna coinage in Mexico City. Virtually as minted. At the time of purchase (June 2020) NGC has certified 25 coin, 2@63 and none higher, so NGC Top Pop.

From the sale's catalogue: "Mexico City, Mexico, 1 real, Charles-Joanna, "Late Series," assayer L to left, mintmark M to right (L-M), NGC MS 63, ex-Potomac Collection (stated on label), "top pop." Nesmith-80c; Cal-73; S-M9; KM-9. 3.40 grams. Sharp full details including legends with luster on fields, patchy rainbow toning, exceptional grade (one of two at this top grade in the NGC census, the next highest being AU 58). NGC #4762849-014. From the Potomac Collection."
