Starting in 1944 and extending until 1946, Cent Planchets were punched out of brass recovered from artillery shells, this resulted in a Cent that had a slightly orange cast to the metal.

This lincoln Cent is representative of the second type of Proofs produced during the 1909-1958 Wheatback era. Brilliant Proofs were more desired than the Matte Proofs produced from 1909-1916, but sentiment has changed over time and now the earlier Mattes are considered more attractive.
