This Switzerland Basel Federal Free Shoot Medal has been engraved by Medal Artist Antoine Bovy. The obverse has a fallen hero at St. Jacob an der Birs. The reverse has a patriotic poem with nine symbols surrounding it. Der/ schild zerbrochen/ das schwert entzwei/ das banner/ in sterbender hand/ triunph das vaterland/ bleibt frei/ gott segne das/ vaterland Translation: "That sign broken the sword divide that banners in dying hand triumph, the native country remains free, God blesses the native country”. History: The Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs was on 26. August 1444 in the course of Old Zürich War. The historic battle cost the mercenary invaders so many casualties that despite their "victory" they turned around and marched back to France, rather than continue to face the Swiss on their home turf. The Medal contains a legend referencing the Battle, and the image conveys the fallen hero.
