View Coin   United States 50C 1935 SPANISH TRAIL PCGS MS 67 The Old Spanish Trail is coveted as one of the more scarce types of the early classic commemorative series set. With a small original mintage of only 10,008 pieces and a history rich in scandal and intrigue, it presents an interesting story. First the coin; it was designed by L.W. Hoffecker with the stated intended purpose of celebrating the 400th anniversary of America by the famed Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. Since "Cabeza de Vaca" translates into "head of cow" and no other likeness of the man was available, Hoffecker used a steer skull to represent Alvar. The intrigue came into play with Hoffecker's scandalous promotion as the sole distributor of the coins and telling collectors the issue was "sold out." He in fact had hyped the sales and held back a large quantity to make $$ off of collectors by selling the coins later at inflated prices. Certainly Hoffecker was not alone in this practice, as the collector was ripe for exploitation in the 1930's era and this scenario played itself out many times in the classic commem era.

This coin is an exceptional Spanish Trail with extremely clean surfaces and fields. The only mark on the coin is a tiny mark on the cow's head seen under a 5x loupe. The obverse features satiny luster enveloping light grayish colored fields and devices with a hint of gold toning along the rim edges. The reverse has wonderful color for this type with golden colored concentric rim toning and light green coloration seen from 4:00-6:00 with satiny luster and untoned natural surfaces. High end & superior eye appeal. CAC certified.

Population: PCGS 102 in 67, 1 67+, 2 in 68. NGC 103 in 67 (including 6*/2+),7 in 68 (includes 2*). CAC 26, 0 higher. (10-12)
View Coin   United States 50C 1936 ALBANY PCGS MS 67 Super PQ eye appeal with startling luster with both the obverse and reverse radiating full cartwheel sheen beneath a highly pleasing variety of hues. View Coin   United States 50C 1936 CINCINNATI PCGS MS 66 Cincinnati's in general are tough commemoratives to find nice due to their scant mintages, as well as their large and open fields. The Philadelphia coin in this trio is an underrated and tough date with a low original mintage of just 5,005. Gem plus coins are scarce and not often available. This coin depicts a warm, coppery golden hue which envelops both coin sides. Additionally, luster booms off the extremely clean devices and fields. Surprisingly, only three coins have received a higher grade by PCGS, one of which was part of the celebrated Hidden Liberty collection. This coin's provenance is from the WPE collection, one of the all time nicest sets ever put together on the PCGS registry. CAC certified.

Provenance: WPE Collection.

View Coin   United States 50C 1936 CLEVELAND PCGS MS 66 CAC certified. Population PCGS 568/ (39 higher in MS67), NGC 485/ 54 higher. A truly beautifully toned and unusually great looking Cleveland featuring iridescent obverse toning in shades of pale-blue violet, green, and gold toning. The reverse is boldly toned with deep and evenly colored shades of orange, reddish gold and cherry. This coin is much nicer than many generic 67's. This Cleveland is a tremendous coin and a great example of "Buy the coin-not the holder!"
View Coin   United States 50C 1936 CLEVELAND PCGS MS 67 Tough to find this nice as many 67's have no character, luster, or pizzaz, and appear ready to retire to the numismatic graveyard. The Cleveland was designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Cleveland as a city. Designed by Brenda Putnam, a bust of Moses Cleaveland, the city's founder, appears on the obverse, while the insignia of the Great Lakes Exposition appears on the reverse. This coin has a wonderful satiny patina and an unusual crescent of ruby and emerald appears on the upper obverse rim, while golden color is seen around the remaining rim and legends. The reverse also has a satiny, yet lustrous patina colored in light gray/green with golden rims/legends. Extremely clean with wonderful eye appeal and CAC approved.

Provenance: WPE Collection.

View Coin   United States 50C 1936 D CINCINNATI PCGS MS 67 The 36D is the" common coin" in the three coin Cincinnati set. It is the easiest coin to locate, is the type coin in the three coin set and is significantly easier to find in high grades than its' 36P and 36S cousins. However, that stated, any Cincinnati in MS67 is a tough find and when looking at the populations of the 36P & 36S there a just a handful graded, this leaves the 36D as the potential type coin in high grades.

This is a superb coin with lustrous and extremely clean surfaces that are presented with a beautiful and subtle toning of caramel, amber, and pale olive-green along the peripheries. Wonderful eye appeal and scarce in this grade. CAC certified.
