Owner Comments:

The gilt-brass HK-290 has long had reputation as an elusive medal, and the aluminum 290A version is similar in rarity. Based on my research including the current NGC pop reports, these are R5 and not R6 rarities as previously believed.

This example is the finest known. It is a lovely medal with proof like fields contrasting a frosty design and hard to improve upon.

As a side note, I have a brass example of 290 that has been silver plated. 290As are aluminum and a plated brass example would be heavier so I do not think there would be any confusion between the two. I hope the silvered version is accepted as a new 290B variety someday.
