Reverse: The Arms of Penryn, a laureated bust upon an antique shield, surmounted by a plumed helmet, surrounded by military trophies, PENRYN VOLUNTEERS on a ribbon above. Ex: FIRST INROLLD APRIL 3. 1794. in two lines

George Chapman George was a captain in the Penryn Volunteers. His halfpence were struck at Matthew Boulton's works in 1796 and shipped to him in August of the year. The obverse bears the arms of Francis Basset, Baron de Dunstanville (1758-1835), Colonel-in-Chief of the Penryn Volunteers, which was founded in April 1794. Francis Basset was made baronet on 24 November 1779 and served as the MP for Penryn, 1780-96 and was created Baron de Dunstanville on 17 June 1796. Mining magnate and liberal patron of the fine arts.
