Obverse: Bust of Charles Roe facing right CHARLES ROE ESTABLISHED THE COPPER WORKS 1758.
Reverse: Genius seated facing left and holding a drill with a worm in her right hand and a cogwheel with six spokes in her left hand. The worm has 12 thread turns. MACCLESFIELD HALFPENNY. Ex: 1790

Charles Row was born in Castleton, Derbyshire in 1714 and went to Macclesfield in 1740 where he erected the first silk mill there. Later he became a partner in several copper mines, the famous Anglesey Mines were first worked successfully under his direction. Charles Roe died on May 3rd, 1781. His firm continued as Roe and Co. and issued their first token in 1789.
