Owner Comments:

Dublin-Turne Camac, D&H-304, VG details-damaged. Edge: Payable in Dublin or Ballymurtagh. Rarity: Very Rare- five traced. - Five known, how rare is that. This was purchased in 1999 from a Davissons auction for $95. Below you'll see a scan of the D&H listing and the Davissons lot. From what I've been told and some of my own conjecture here's the likely story on this token. Four of the five known tokens all have scratchs on the left side, in the field of the obverse. The fifth token has not been seen by anyone. The thinking is that at the most ten tokens were struck when it was noticed that something was not right. Most people seem to think it was the fact that the "R" has been left off the "Turner" name and thus spelled "Turne". This may well be the reason striking was stopped but I think it may be due to the fact that the dies were clashed. When viewing the D&H plate coin the base of the ground from the obverse is visable running from the M of Camac to the H of Chairman on the reverse. Most experts agree that the damage done on all the tokens is a cancellation mark. After the minters saw the mistake of the missing R or the damage done from the clashing they dicided to stop make the tokens and canceled them with the scratchs and tossed them in the scrap pile. My guess, someone pulled them out and spent them. Now, why cancel them? No idea. The fact that all known D&H-304's have the same scratch in the same area seems to point that they were canceled so as not to be used and some how made into public usage. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
