The first house for foundlings was built in 1740 through the efforts of Thomas Coram, a shipmaster. Any infant not suffering from disease was admitted without question. The foundation stone for the building pictured was laid in 1742 and the institution opened in 1754 when the children in the original hospital were transferred over. The building shown was demolished in 1934.
