Critique: Not very exciting looking example of this moderately abundant George V gold sovereign. Quite a few available in MS63, but as of March 2024 only a handful graded higher. This coin is extremely popular with those who collect sovereigns by year. Only the three Australian mints produced coins in 1922, and both the Melbourne and Sydney issues are extremely rare and expensive. So anyone wanting a sov dated 1922 has no other reasonable option besides 1922-P.
I was expecting to win this coin rather cheaply since it is so common, second tier, and not overly attractive. Plus, Australian coins don't seem to generate as much interest in British auctions as London mint coins do. In fact, it turned out far better, and I was able to get the coin for only about US$100 over melt. I purchased quite a few gold sovs at this auction, and this was the cheapest one. So now this year is finally represented in my custom sovereign date set.
