Owner Comments:
An 11 medal series of historic customhouses were struck by the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Mint in conjunction with the U.S. Customs Service as their contribution to the United States bicentennial celebration. Bronze Wheeling medals were sold by the US Mint. Bronze and silver versions were likely sold by the West Virginia Independence Hall Foundation, Inc. on May 23, 1974 during US Custom Services bicentennial ceremony. The silver customhouse medals are not listed in any current reference on mint medals.
