In the eighteenth-century canals were generally called Inland Navigations and before the days of railroads Birmingham depended on them for the transport of her manufactured goods and the supplies of raw materials. The Navigation Office had a coal wharf attached to handle the coal mined from the Wednesbury collieries.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
