The hotel was built in 1772 by subscription of fifty shares for £100 each. Inside was a concert room, orchestra and organ. The hotel played an important role in 1791 in the Birmingham riots. Later the hotel was known as Styles’s Hotel and then as the Royal Hotel.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
