Construction on the hospital began in 1766 but was not completed until 1788 and it was opened in 1789. The building wings shown were added in 1791 and the hospital has continued to be expanded. Part of the hospital’s income was derived from a Tricentennial Musical Festival, established in 1778.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
