The Cathedral Church of St. Phillip sits on high ground in Birmingham and is the seat of the Bishop of Birmingham. Construction began in 1711 and was completed in 1719. The cathedral was consecrated in 1715 and dedicated to St. Phillip as a tribute to its benefactor Robert Phillips. The Cathedral is a Grade I listed building.
During WW2 the cathedral was bombed and gutted in November 1940 and the building was restored in 1948.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
