This coin was minted at the beginning of the War of 1812 This war between the United States and Great Britain ended in 1814 but saw the burning of the White House by invading British forces.Prior to the White House being burned on August 24,1814,First Lady Dolley Madison ordered that the full-length portrait of George Washington be saved along with all official White House papers.The portrait of Washington was painted by Gilbert Stuart of Rhode Island in 1797 and was installed in the White House in November of 1800.The painting was returned to the White House after it was rebuilt in 1817.
