The building was originally a hospital founded at the beginning of the reign of Henry II. At the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the chapel was purchased and converted to a Free School.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 47 pieces featuring 19 Coventry buildings made for collectors. Peter Kempson also married each of the 19 obverse tokens with a reverse featuring the bust of George Frederick Handel using the obverse die of a private token made for J. Hardingham.
