I acquired this coin by making an offer to its owner through Heritage. It was previously cataloged and auctioned by Heritage, and even graded and encapsulated by NGC, as a ducat of TOMASSO Mocenigo. https://coins.ha.com/itm/italy/venice/italy-venice-tomaso-mocenigo-1414-23-gold-ducat-nd-/a/3029-31613.s?type=moto-accepted-buyer
Thanks to having recently acquired a ducat of Giovanni Mocenigo, I recognized this coin as being mis-attributed, and actually the rarer GIOVANNI Mocenigo's ducat. My offer was accepted, and it is now among the finest graded ducats of this doge at either PCGS or NGC. I have listed the other example I already had for sale; it was graded at AU-55. This coin is from the Eric P Newman collection, and I doubt that he himself had this mis-attributed. I am not sure how it got mistaken by NGC, or especially by Heritage. It is now re-holdered by NGC and properly attributed, making it tied with another coin at MS63 for second best to one example at MS65.
Giovanni Ser di Mocenigo, Jr. (1409 – November 4, 1485), Pietro Mocenigo's brother, was doge of Venice from 1478 to 1485. He fought at sea against the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and on land against Ercole I d'Este, duke of Ferrara, from whom he recaptured Rovigo and the Polesine.
