Obverse: A view of the ancient High Cross within a railing THE HIGH CROSS TAKEN DOWN IN 1751.
Reverse: The Arms of the Borough of Gloucester surmounted by a Cap of Maintenance with CITY TOKEN at the sides of the shield and P. KEMPSON FECIT alongside, the date 17 97 split beneath the shield, the legend THE ARMS OF GLOCESTER. around the edge

The High Cross was first built during the reign of Richard III at the intersection of the 4 Gate streets. It was rebuilt under the reigns of Henry VII and Henry III. It was taken down in 1751 as it was considered a nuisance to passing traffic.
