Owner Comments:

Pasquale Malipiero was elected October 30, 1457 , when the former Doge Foscari was still alive. Two days after the death of his predecessor he decided to attend state funerals in senatorial clothes instead of customs.

Elected by the politically adverse families of the Foscari party, he showed himself too tied to them and for this his government action turned out to be weak and inconclusive. He often refused to make even the most elementary decisions by continually postponing them.

The confrontation with the predecessor, who had always been self-confident and determined, soon made itself felt and the people perceived this weakness, motivating him and not always giving him due respect.

In 1458 he signed some laws that limited the power of the Council of Ten .

In 1459 Pope Pio II asked Venice for galleys in order to participate in a new crusade against the infidels, but the doge made reservations and everything went awry.

The following years passed quietly until his death on 7 May 1462 .

I purchased this raw from an Artemide Aste auction in 2018 and sent it in to NGC in 2019.

NGC has graded two of these higher, in MS65, and two including this one in MS64, one in 63, one in 62 and one in 55
PCGS has graded one of these in MS64 and three in MS63.
