Owner Comments:

Rarity: 19 -Original Mintage: 208,000 (the highest of the series) - Known Survivors in all grades: 2,800-3,500. Variety: 1-A - The 1891-CC half eagle is the most available CC mint $5 gold issue by far. Commonly seen in mid AU to lower uncirculated, it is almost never seen in grades below XF. The coin shown here has a dazzling golden-yellow hue with loads of frosty luster and is among the nicest looking examples in my set. It has a very strong strike with superb detail. As mentioned above, it is plentiful in all AU grades and is easily obtainable in lower MS; moderately scarce in MS-63 but very scarce in MS-64; gems remain extremely rare. It is the coin of choice for type set collectors desiring one affordable high grade specimen from the mint on Carson Street. Finest known: PCGS MS-65(1) & NGC MS-65(5). Important 1891 events: Grand finale of Liberty Seated coinage. New era of "Barber" silver coinage to begin in 1892. Wrigley Co. founded in Chicago. Grand opening of Music Hall in NY (now known as Carnegie Hall); Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is opening guest conductor. PLEASE NOTE: OBVERSE SCRATCH ON SLAB, NOT COIN.
