Greenland - 1944 5 Kroner - KM #9 - Mintage: 100,000

This is the only coin struck for Greenland in 1944. It was minted at the Philadelphia Mint in brass recovered from spent artillery shell casings. It was primarily struck for use by U.S. servicemen stationed in Greenland during World War II. At the time, 5 Kroner was equivalent to one US Dollar.

The obverse was designed by Gilroy Roberts, the ninth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint between 1948 and 1964. Mr. Roberts is best known for his obverse design for the Kennedy half dollar.

Date acquired: 11/19/2008 (already graded by NGC)
