Presenting Coins depicting the Buffalo/Bison/Indian Head US Coins, designed or inspired by sculptor James Earle Fraser's depictions of Black Diamond(Starring as the Buffalo), and the American Indian (Images posed for by Chief Iron Tail and Chief Two Moons).

Set Goals
20th & 21st Century US minted coins featuring Fraser's designs, beginning with The Indian Head or Buffalo nickel, circulated from 1913 to 1938. The Obverse & Reverse designs were later duplicated on MS and Proof versions of the 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative(90%)Silver Dollar, and the 2006-W 1oz. 24-karat .9999 Gold Bullion $50 coin

Black Diamond who was born in 1893, a hybrid bull and cow given to the Central Park Zoo (in NYC) by Barnum and Bailey. His coat was unusually dark, and in his prime weighed more than 1,500 pounds, and was a most popular attraction at the zoo. Despite his size, he was quite docile, a virtue that made him the perfect model. But not everyone was impressed with his appearance. The director of the Zoo called the bison on the nickel "a sad failure," with its head drooped as if it had lost all hope in the world. Legend has it that Old "BD" refused to pose! He kept turning to watch Fraser draw instead of standing sideways. Fraser had to get a zookeeper to catch the animal's eye while Fraser snuck around for a side view.

The first Buffalo nickels were first struck in 1913, and pictured Black Diamond standing on a mound above the words "Five Cents." When Mint officials decided the inscription wouldn't hold up in circulation, the design was changed to show the buffalo standing on level ground. Discontinued in 1938, the images from both sides of the nickel have since been reprised in 2001 on a 1 oz silver MS and Proof US commemorative coin, and since 2006 on MS and Proof gold buffalo gold 1 oz and fractional bullion coins.

Inspired by Frazier's design, emerged versions of the American Bison as on the 1991 Mount Rushmore Commemorative Clad Half Dollar (Reverse); 2005 Westward Journey Nickel "Grazing Buffalo" Obverse; and on the Obverse of the Clad and Silver versions of the 2005 Kansas, the 2006 North Dakota, and 2007 Montana Statehood Quarters, and finally the 2010 Yellowstine National Park Series Quarters. Each series coins depicting the American Bison in various natural landscape settings.
