View Coin HK-389 - Round Hole United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389 PORTOLA FESTIVAL NGC MS 65 BN Holed as Made - Round hole for mounting on a badge. The basic Type shown in H-K. I also own two of these on the original souvenir badges, which are beyond rare.
View Coin HK-389 - Oval Slot United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389 PORTOLA FESTIVAL - HOLED NGC MS 63 BN Holed as Made - Oval Slot for mounting on a leather watch fob. A bit scarcer than the Round Hole Type; NGC does not distinguish between hole "types". I also own one of these on the original fob strap, which is Silver Plated (HK-389B)
View Coin HK-389 - UNholed. United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389 PORTOLA FESTIVAL BILL WEBER COLLECTION NGC MS 65 BN Unholed, the only I've ever seen although others exist as this is not the H-K plate piece as far as I know. ex-Weber. Oddly enough, I was the underbidder on this piece and the auction, then got the opportunity to purchase it later.
View Coin HK-389 - Off-metal, unholed. United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389A PORTOLA FESTIVAL BRASS BRASS, B.WEBER COLLECTION NGC MS 64 Probably the only known, not listed in H-K 1st Ed. as it was not known the the authors. Based on similar other pieces in the H-K text, this may be a test strike.
View Coin HK-389 - Round hole. United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389 PORTOLA FESTIVAL NCS AU The first Portola Festival celebrated the survival of the City after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. As it was only a five day event, these medals have always been scarce, and rare as a Gem. Normally always holed, as they were either mounted on a badge, or pierced for a watch fob strap - the very few found unholed I am convinced were leftovers or "seconds" left unsold. The finest unholded piece I know of was Bill Weber's, on which I was the unfortunate underbidder at the auction - only to be able to purchase it later. Included here as this has interesting toning unlike any I have seen on these, although NCS noted "Environmental Damage".
View Coin HK-389 - Round Hole, Silver Plated. United States SC$1 1909 CA HK-389B PORTOLA FESTIVAL SILVER PLATED NGC MS 62 Silver-plated version of the 1909 Portola piece - assigned HK-389B by NGC. This was the first certified by NGC, and still the only Unc as of May, 2017. These are extremely scarce, as evidenced by the fact that Hibler and Kappen apparently never saw one to include it their book - nor is it in the second edition. I am of the opinion that the silvered versions were plated after being holed, so no unholed ones can exist (?). Weber's had the oblong watch fob hole, so obviously they come with both "options" as far as a hole. I also own one of these with an oval slot on the original pig skin watch fob strap.
View Coin HK-397 United States SC$1 1913 CA HK-397 PORTOLA FESTIVAL OSTHEIMER COLLECTION EX. WERNER - HK PLATE NGC MS 64 The King - the H-K plate example, ex-Ostheimer, ex-Werner. Finest certified although I know of two others that might match it that have never been certified (as of May,2017). I also owned the Bill Weber piece (62) at one time; this was a "trade up" from Jeff Shevlin.
