Set Description
This set contains a number of octagonal medals produced by the Nevada City Mint in California. These medals commemorate the towns and history of the California Gold Rush. In 1975, R.D. (Don) Schmitz came to Nevada City, California to start his one-man Nevada City Mint. The Nevada City Township owned the Jas Ott Assay Office and leased it to Schmitz. The Assay Office was located at the heart of the California Gold Rush territory more than a century ago. Schmitz had been the official minter of Nevada when he operated the press at the Carson City Mint.

The Empire Mine is on the National Register of Historic Places, a federal Historic District, and a California Historical Landmark. Since 1975 California State Parks has administered and maintained the mine as a historic site.
