This is a rare 1885 S Half Eagle Star (*) Gold coin in magnificent condition with a good sharp strike. In 1885 the San Francisco mint produced 1,211,500 of these 90% Gold coins. Most of these coins graded to date by NGC are at the Uncirculated MS 62 level or below. Only one finer NGC 1885 S Half Eagle Star coin exists. This hard to find coin is stunning with a sharp strike and near ultra cameo contrast. This nickel three-cent piece was designed by James B. Longacre; weight 1.94 grams; composition .750 copper and .250 nickel. In 1881 the Philadelphia mint produced exactly 3,575 of these proof nickel three cent pieces. Most do not have cameo contrast.
