The first of the silver eagle reverse proof coins was in 2006. This first version was paired with the first burnished silver eagle as part of a 20th Anniversary 3-coin set, marking the start of the silver eagle series in 1986.

By virtue of this coin being the very first reverse proof offered, this date was included in "The Top 50 Most Popular Coins", "The 100 Greatest US Modern Coins, 4th ed" and "PCGS, Top 100 Modern Coins".

5 years passed before the US Mint produced another silver eagle reverse proof. The 2011 was the fourth offering in the series as the mint had already produced a gold, silver and platinum. This version was produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the silver eagle program and came as part of a 5 coin set. The set came with a striking blue lacquered display box with the 5 coins in a single row.

This is one of two coins in the set that was not included for sale elsewhere, and therefore retains the highest premium.

Once again, due to the general rarity of less than 100K struck, this date was included in "The Top 50 Most Popular Coins", "The 100 Greatest US Modern Coins, 4th ed" and "PCGS, Top 100 Modern Coins".

The fourth coin in the silver eagle reverse proof series was made at a 3rd mint facility, this time in West Point, NY. This offering commemorated the 25th anniversary of the conversion of the West Point facility in name from a bullion depository to a mint facility. The facility still remains as a gold bullion storage facility while also manufacturing most gold, silver, platinum and palladium collector eagle coins. Separately from this silver reverse proof, the West Point facility also minted the very first enhanced uncirculated coin as a silver eagle which was part of the same silver eagle set and the first and only gold buffalo proof, both during 2013.

Yet again, 6 years passed before the US Mint got back to striking a reverse proof in the silver eagle series. Reverse proofs had been completed for a number of other coins including every other denomination during this timeframe, including offerings such as a 2018 silver reverse proof set, a series of presidential dollars in 2015 and 2016, and a new series in dollar coins called American Innovation. 2019 itself became a year of many reverse proof offerings including an AI dollar coin, Lincoln cent, Kennedy half, Palladium Eagle and two different silver eagles. This 2019-W was minted at West Point and was paired with a Canadian Maple Leaf as part of a two coin set, called the Pride of Two Nations. This set commemorated the cooperation between these two North American neighbors as well as the longevity of both mints.

This finish was different than past reverse proofs as the mint chose to add more variety to the finishes within different features of the devices. The selective finish configuration that was applied was labeled as an "Enhanced Reverse Proof" and can be seen most distinctly in Liberty's robe. The combination here offers a contrast between the previous reverse proofs and a newer finish first developed in 2013 called enhanced uncirculated, showcasing the technological improvements in die making with selective finishing.

The mintage just barely edged out the previous reverse proof low from the 25th anniversary set, but very soon, that would change again.

2021 brought the final year of the classic type 1/heraldic eagle reverse designed by John Mercanti to a close and unveiled the new type 2 "Eagle Landing" design from Emily Damstra. In essence, the set was a 35th Anniversary of the eagle program, but it paired a West Point version of the original type 1 with a San Francisco minted type 2. This is the San Francisco variety.
