Owner's Description

General Comments: 1891, along with the 1890, is an under-appreciated Key date in the series. Difficult to find in circulated grades, it becomes nearly impossible to locate in Uncirculated condition. The 1891 has the lower mintage and higher catalog value compared to the 1890, though both coins are equally difficult to locate in mint state. A very under-rated date, which may be just as or more challenging for the collector to find in high grades as the 1893 or 1915. Unknown in Gem. Minor Varieties: 1. o/o superscript o (FC) Many coins have the o/o superscript o. The 8 and last 1 in the date are always higher than the other numerals. On many coins, a die crack is seen running through the "O" in "FINO". Availability: G-VF: Scarce XF-AU: Very Scarce 60-62: Very Rare 63+: Very Rare Population Report (August 2016): NGC: One in 63 PCGS: None graded Total at both services: One; One in Uncirculated NGC also has one UNC Details coin. Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 8 VF: 12.50 XF: 22.50 Current KM: VF: 16 XF: 32.50 UNC: 72.50 The 1972 guide has this date at better than 1893! While that might be a stretch in circulated grades, it is likely an accurate assessment for mint state specimens. Very few 1891's ever cross the auction block, so pricing can be difficult to determine. I would expect to pay 10-20 for a VF example. 30-60 for an XF/AU example. Third-party graded problem free mint state 1891's could move at 150-200++ in today's market. Mintage: 64,000 Auction Results: Ebay 4/25/2013 Fine $10.50 (WP) Ebay 12/13/2014 VG-F $10.45 Ebay 12/29/2014 Choice AU $28.70 Ebay 8/12/2015 NGC UNC Details - Surface Hairlines $20.67 (Coin appears to have definite wear) Ebay 3/19/2016 Choice AU $34 (Same coin as 12/29/2014) Ebay 7/24/2016 Raw Choice AU 58 Nice $57.25 The only raw UNC I've seen was in the Whittier Heritage lot in 2006. Would probably not grade above 63. Set Specimen: This coin is other-worldly and is one of my favorites in the set. Truly original in every way. Deep mottled grey-brown toning (this is a good thing!) mingle with oil slick rainbow tones. Strike is crisp, fields are clear of marks, and the luster beams through unbroken. Undergraded by at least one point if not more. This coin has all the allure that's missing from blast white surfaces. One can gaze deeply into it as it rotates slowly in the light. The fact that it is rare, and the only, and finest 1891 graded, are icing on the cake. Photo copyright NGC
